What’s Included in the AZ Truck Training? MELT Program
The Required Training for Your AZ License
The Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) program is required by law in Ontario for anyone looking to get an AZ license. This program includes a minimum of 103.5 hours of instruction and is designed to provide you with the essential skills and knowledge needed to safely operate a large truck on Ontario’s roads.
Once you complete the training, your driving record will automatically be updated, and you’ll be ready to schedule your AZ road test. The best part? Your MELT training is valid for life. If you’re looking to upgrade from a Restricted Class A (AR) license to a full AZ, or if you have a commercial driver’s license from another country or province, the MELT program is the first step.

Who Needs to Complete the MELT Program?
The MELT Program is required for anyone who:
- Wants to upgrade from a Restricted Class A (AR) license to a full AZ license.
- Previously held a full AZ license, but it’s been invalid for 3+ years.
- Holds a commercial driver’s license from another country.
- Has had a Class A equivalent license from another province for less than 12 months.
If you already hold a valid full Class A license, you do not need to complete the MELT training.
